Title: Peer Support Specialist

Location: Atlanta, GA

Overview: 

Grady Memorial Hospital’s Mobile Integrated Health (MIH) program is launching an innovative and timely Post-Overdose Outreach Program that seeks to prevent fatal and non-fatal overdoses by connecting recent overdose patients with substance abuse treatment and support services. The Peer Support Specialist will be assigned to this program to conduct community outreach and engage survivors of an overdose after hospital discharge. The individual will provide non-clinical services intended to aid patients in treatment and recovery and reduce the risk of a subsequent overdose. Services will primarily be provided in the community; however, the Peer Support Specialist may meet patients in the ED and/or hospital to improve continuity in care. 

The MIH Post-Overdose Outreach Program receives financial support and technical assistance from the Overdose Response Strategy (ORS), a public safety-public health collaboration between 11 High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) programs and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to identify effective and promising strategies that prevent overdose deaths at the community, state, or health-system level. The Peer Support Specialist will by hired by the Atlanta-Carolinas HIDTA, but will work at the Grady’s MIH office. 


Responsibilities: 

  • Provides service coordination and linkage to services
  • Provides individual training and counseling related to substance abuse treatment and recovery
  • Escorts or supports patients to keep appointments
  • Actively participates in multidisciplinary treatment team
  • With training, engages in crisis prevention and management
  • Engages in collateral contacts with family and community supports and manages substance abuse treatment and referrals. 
  • Performs other administrative or project tasks as assigned


Qualifications & Skill Requirements: 

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • 3-5 years demonstrated personal recovery and sustained abstinence from alcohol and/or drug use. Must be actively engaged in his/her own recovery program.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office. 
  • Able to exercise sound judgment to work independently within guidelines. 
  • CARES certification


Contract Term & Rate: 3-6 month contract; PRN with a rate of $25/hr. 

Background Check: The individual hired for this position will require a background investigation. If required, continuation of the contract is contingent upon the successful adjudication of the results of this investigation.
